The story goes like this, Mehmoud, a cook who used to work for Jim Corbett, narrates Jim Corbett's thrilling and exciting stories of tiger hunting to a young boy. While Mehmoud is cooking he talks about wrestling with a Cobra in bed, the Crocodile that dragged him into the river and a Tiger who comes looking for the cook.

The book is filled with humorous and vivid descriptions of the entire episodes that Mehmoud narrates. Also, Ruskin Bond remains true to the Indian way of talking and hence comes some of his funny sentences spoken by Mehmoud such as “A tiger a week that was nothing to Carpet-sahib!” This was said by Mehmoud when the young boy asks if he had ever seen Jim Corbett shooting a tiger.
