Ahmedabad India; June 19, 2013: The Times of India is celebrating its 175 anniversary and as a part of this grand celebration, Sports Historian Boria Majumdar has launced a book called 'Sporting Times'. This unique book giving insight into the past 175 years of sports history was launched recently by the three sports icons: Sachin Tendulkar, Abhinav Bindra and the writer himself Boria Majumdar.

Here's what Boria Majumdar had to say about his experience of writing this book, “I'm a sports enthusiast. I woke up at 4 am every day to dig up the archives. Sports today is national news and it always was. How many people know that in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, the Indian team refused to do the Hitler salute.”

Sporting Times includes the sports reports from the present times to the reports dating back to 1840. The book is said to be the bible for all sports lovers in India and especially for all the cricket lovers as it has photographs, annecdotes and several other interesting update on various cricketers and matches.

The Times of India is planning to release 5 other books in commeration on the occassion of  175 years of celebration said Shirijeet Mishra, COO of BCCL. He aslo added that in support of Sporting Times that,  “As a child, when my father read the front page, I sat across him and read the back page. For me, the sports page was the front page”.

About Author

Boria Majumdar was born on 8th of March, 1976 in Calcutta to Dr. Prodosh Majumdar and Mrs. Roopa Majumdar. He did his B.A and M.A.  in History from University of Calcutta and later went to University of Oxford, U.K. For his DPhil. He has worked as Senior Research Fellow (SRF) at La Trobe University in Australia and  is  presently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire in the U.K. He has published a wide range of sports news and events in his career. Also, he is a popular media figure as he has appeared in several TV programmes on sports on channels like Times Now, Ten Sports, ESPN, NDTV etc. Boria Majumdar is Executive Academic Editor of the journals Soccer & Society and Sport in Society Deputy Executive Academic Editor of The International Journal of the History of Sport and General Editor of the Routledge Series, Sport in the Global Society. He has recently compiled a book on Indian Sports History of 175 years called Sporting Times.
