As Sweet As Honey begins with the preparation of a wedding ceremony in the small Asian Island called Pi on the Indian coast. Meterling, a 6 feet tall lady is getting married to a short English old man named Archer, who is owner of a gin distillery on Pi Island. Meterling has already been ostracized from the society as she is unusually tall and her marriage with an old English man becomes even more blasphemous. Unfortunately, during the previous day of wedding, the to-be husband of Meterling dies all of a sudden. This leads his sister to think that it was a murder to gain all the wealth of her brother.

Later in the novel, Meterling discovers soon after her to-be husband Archer's death that she is pregnant. Archer's brother marries Meterling to support her and takes her to London along with him. Thus begins the journey of an Eastern woman in the Western world.

The novel brings forth the abyss that can never be bridged between the two cultures of east and west. The first half of the novel is narrated by one of Meterling's younger cousin sister and several other family members. It is only once she goes to London that you get to hear Meterling's voice. The entire story is evolved out of conversations, view points of the various characters in the 'stream of consciousness' style of writing. Therefore, this book is considered to be an East Asian homage to Virginia Woolf's famous novel 'To The Lighthouse' which has been written in the same style.
