Piyush Jha, a Bollywood film actor-director published his first crime fiction called Mumbaistan, which happened to be a compilation of 3 short novels. The book became an instant favorite with all especially with the people who share the same love and affection as the author for the Mumbai city.

In Compass Box Killer, Piyush Jha, invokes his first novella protagonist of 'Injectionawala' Inspector Virkar . This novel is supposed to be a part of crime fiction series of Inspector Virkar's exploits in the murky world of crime. Jha has planned to write a dedicated series of crime fictions starring his creation Inspector Virkar.

The novel is all about Inspector Virkar and his modus-operandi. For all those who are not familiar with this superb character created by Jha, Virkar is a Mumbai cop who grew up in the shanties of Macchimar Nagar in Colaba, Mumbai. He was fortunate to have a convent education at Holy Mary High School and his dream was to become an engineer. However, his dream was shattered as he couldn't make it to engineering and therefore settled for Psychology at his alma mater Elphinestone College. He also thought of getting into MBA as it became a rage with the youngsters but unfortunately he couldn't make the cut.

When Virkar has lost all hopes he came across an ad in the paper by Maharashtra Public Service Commission and this inspired him to join the police force. Virkar is a bold and rebellious inspector right from the start, he once tried to correct the English pronunciation of his instrutor and therefore was transferred to a naxalite infested zone in Ghadchiroli. He adapted to this place very quickly and in fact he became successful in preventing the young men to join the naxalite forces.

In the ‘The Compass Box Killer’, Virkar is presented with a challenge to track down a shrewd, ruthless, serial killer who is on the loose and who leaves traces for Virkar hidden in the compass box. In the words of Jha, Virkar is “an underdog. That’s what I love about him!He believes in justice but believes it is never delivered.”

The novel is sure to keep its reader on the edge of the seat while turning each page of the novel. I have read Mumbaistan and the idea of clubbing three stories into one book- "bought" me. For a first time author- back then- it was a challenge. Thus when Piyush Jha, came back with The Compass Box Killer- I was expecting miracles from him. An author improves with the passing days and the same stands true here. The plot has zero potholes, ample of bloodstains and a spine chilling narration. Here none is to be trusted and none is to be spared. The generation that feeds of TV series like Arjun, CID, and Bomkesh Bakhi- will find a thriller series like this one, a sure shot Boon!!
